ANDY 1, WORST CRIMINALS EVER 0

The van was broken into last night in Charlotte, NC after playing The Evening Muse. Not to worry… Shawn and I managed to find the only Motel 6 on the east coast(maybe even the country) that charges by the floor. Let me explain: There was no elevator, so there was a lot of walking involved to get to the higher floors. Therefore, the pricing was as follows - 1st: $50, 2nd: $40, 3rd: $30 ( all plus tax, phone/key deposit and a quick check of both driver’s licenses, of course ). Needless to say, the area we were in was kind of shady. I don’t know why they didn’t just fix the elevator and charge the same price for every room like most motels. Though, at 2 am I have to admit all I wanted to do was go to bed. That’s exactly what I did, after bringing in everything that was valuable in the van. This is part of our regular routine. The only thing in the van was the dissembled Andy Zipf Custom Shop and a very cleverly hidden i-pod. I slept well, got up for check out at 10:55 to check out at 11 so I could get our $10 key/phone deposit back and passed by the van on the way back to our 2nd floor “suite”. The first thing I saw was shattered glass on the ground next to the passenger window. Man, the feeling that sight brings really, really, really sucks. Then, I ran over to check what was missing. It looked like they busted the window, opened the door and rifled through the glove compartment and a couple of our Custom Shop bins…but took NOTHING! I yelled up to Shawn and he came down to check as well. Sure enough, we determined they are either the worst criminals ever, or they don’t like custom t-shirts and songs made with love by yours truly. I think it is the former. So, we cleaned up the glass as best we could and called around to find a company to replace it. Two hours later we were on the road to Columbia, SC(where I am typing this) with a new passenger side window. We gave the guys who came to our rescue two t-shirts and some stickers, to which they replied, “Sweet.” Now we are bros. God bless swag power. In an hour, Kyler England and I will begin our set at Jammin Java and all is well in the world. Yes, it was inconvenient and infuriating to have the van broken into, but I learned a valuable lesson, which I would like to pass on to you: Never stay in a hotel that charges less money for a room on the highest floor. It’s not worth it. P.S. I’m pretty sure it was this guy: Owner: Man Tried to Hide Guitar in Pants By Associated Press Tue Nov 28, 10:48 PM DE QUEEN, Ark. - The guitar-shaped bulge in Morgan Conatser’s clothing tipped off a music store owner that there might be a crime in progress. Clifton Lovell, owner of Guitars and Cadillacs on U.S. Highway 71 in De Queen, was talking with a customer last week when he saw Conatser, 29, walking out of the store. “I saw him walking out to his pickup truck and the bulges in his leather jacket. I said, ‘Hey what have you got there,’” Clifton Lovell said. He said Conatser, 29, replied, “Nothing.” Lovell pointed toward the unnatural shapes in Conatser’s jacket and pants and said, “You’ve got something.” Conatser then removed a solid body electric guitar from his pants leg and from underneath his jacket. “The neck of the guitar was almost down to his knee and the back of the guitar was almost up to his neck. It wasn’t hard to spot. There was no way he could sit down or get into the pickup,” Lovell said.

THE FUTURE OF MUSIC

You need to stop what you’re doing right now and go to this link, listen to what Terry Mcbride(CEO of Nettwerk Music Group) has to say and then tell everyone you know to listen.

Pay close attention to parts 3 and 4.  This is how we(fan/artist) are going to bring music back to the ears of the people and out of the hands of old school record labels.  We are going to win.

BOND

I saw the new Bond last night.  I have to say, I was impressed.  Daniel Craig was a more gritty 007.  I realized while watching the movie that he was in Munich.  That’s a great movie as well.  There’s a part in that one, where Craig sings ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’.

NELSON MANDELA

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” - Nelson Mandela

Someone sent this to me and it blew my mind.  I just wanted to share.

TO HEAR AND TO HOLD

Tell me.  What does your record collection look like?  I guess it depends when you started to collect, but I’m curious.  Mine has become a mix of CDs with full artwork, burned CDRs and a bunch of songs on my laptop.   I don’t own one actual record.  I don’t even have any tapes.  Does that make me less of a music lover?  I don’t think so.  I believe music will continue to find new ways to reveal itself to our ears.  I’m sure the live musical experience will change too. Better microphones, amplification, speakers, lights, smells, tastes…but, some things will always be the same.  There’s nothing wrong with standing in the middle of a room with a guitar and putting yourself out there.  No place to hide.  I kind of like that vulnerability.  I also like the production of a huge show.  There are many ways to let a song shine.  That’s what’s important.  The song.  If it grabs you where you need it, you can have a copy on vinyl, 8-track, cassette tape, cd or mp3…it all works the same just as long as you can connect with it.  One of these days, we might all be walking around with our music collection embedded in a tiny brain chip.  Wouldn’t it be cool to have the soundtrack to your life playing as you feel it?  It could happen.

THE MIDDLE CLASS MUSICIAN

It has been said that in rock and roll, there is only feast or famine.  Well, according to Rumblefish…there will soon be a middle class musician.  At their site, www.rumblefish.com, you can find more information on how this innovative company is making some waves.  They are my kind of people.  Taking chances.  Stepping outside of the antiquated music industry model.

I spoke with them today on the phone and they are as nice as they are brilliant.  I was very encouraged to find out there are people out there that get what I am trying to do as well.

ARE WE GOING DOWN LIVE

Someone from Emmaus, a community center in Gettysburg, Pa,  recorded this yesterday.  It came out pretty good, I think.

HOPE

This is something I always talk to you about.  Actually, I was thinking about some of my lyrics and I realized that much of my songwriting is about hope.  So Am I, Your Fire, Find You, Fields of Mourning, Maybe Tonight, Keep Your Body Broken, Feel the Weight…I could go on and on.  Sometimes, I write them for you.  Sometimes, I write them for me.  Last night I wrote a new song. It doesn’t have a name yet, but I definately wrote it for me.  Telling myself to hold on.  I need to do that every now and then.   I have been doing this thing for a few years now, and there are times when I think “What’s taking so long?”, but then I see what you and I have accomplished together and I relax.  I say you and I, because if you are reading this blog then chances are you’re a fan, friend or family and are interested in my little ramblings and what I’m up to.  Without the support of you and people like yourselves, I would not have been able to make my record or tour at the rate that I do.  There is only so much a person can do on their own.  That goes for anybody and whatever you do.  Soon, I will have 3 more songs mixed, I’ll be on tour in some city near you and everything will happen in the right time and place.  I have hope.  I have always had hope that I will succeed.  “This ain’t no level road” and it certainly does not come together overnight, but then it wouldn’t be an adventure and the rewards would not be as satisfying after so much hard work and sacrifice.  So, I’ll keep on.
